The group’s journey will take participants through all six New England states over 50 days, covering approximately 1000 miles. Making this action possible are the several hundred host communities who are providing simple meals and sleeping spaces. More importantly, the host groups are gathering people to share ideas on how they can become peacemakers for our time when violence, injustice, and disregard for the environment have devastated lives and the planet.
The WALK begins with a send-off celebration at All Souls Unitarian Universalist Church in New London, CT, on September 6, 2009. A closing celebration will take place on October 25, 2009, at the Open Table of Christ, a Methodist-affiliated church in Providence, RI, that epitomizes the philosophy of the WALK: unity and diversity, multiple languages and music styles.
The WALK will involve the efforts of many religious traditions: Unitarian Universalist, Jewish, United Church of Christ / Congregational, United Methodist, Episcopal, Baha’i, Roman Catholic, Quaker, Lutheran, Baptist, and Presbyterian. It will include stops at elementary schools, high school schools, and institutions of higher learning as well as at retirement communities and in private homes among people concerned about hands-on, active peacemaking and systemic change.
We walk for the children, and for our children’s children
We walk for the little ones, the weak and the small
We walk now together to gather our courage
To imagine a future of life for us all.
We Walk for the Children (Newell Hendricks)
If you can join with us for any part of the journey - a few hours, a day, a week, a month, or all 50 days, please let us know (See Itinerary).
We would love to have you join your feet or tires with us as we walk to spread the message of peace, justice and the care of creation throughout New England this fall.
Please contact Marion Grant at 617-840-7858.
There will be a strong international presence on our WALK this year. Nicaragua’s Kairos Association for Formation is arranging for ten Nicaraguans to join us, a few at a time. We know that their presence will greatly enrich our perspective and our conversations. If you want to help bring the Nicaraguans to WALK, please send your support to Uncasville UMC, 34 Maple Avenue Extension, Uncasville, CT 06382.
We hope that you will consider joining in the excitement of this journey in either or both of these ways!
